Green Business Grants Ontario 2026 | Sustainability Funding
Published March 2, 2026 · Updated for 2026 program landscape
Energy costs are a major expense for Ontario businesses — and they're rising. Green business grants and incentive programs can help Ontario SMBs invest in energy efficiency, clean technology, and sustainable operations in ways that both reduce costs and qualify for substantial government funding. This guide covers the most significant federal and provincial sustainability grants, utility rebate programs, and clean technology funding available to Ontario businesses in 2026.
Canada Greener Homes Grant (Commercial Successor Programs)
The Canada Greener Homes Grant for residential properties ran from 2021–2024 and is now closed. However, the federal government has since launched or announced successor programs focused on clean heating and energy efficiency for both residential and commercial properties:
- Oil to Heat Pump Affordability Program: For businesses and properties still using heating oil — covers costs of converting to electric heat pumps, with grants of up to $10,000 per unit. Confirm current status and eligibility at canada.ca/heat-pump
- Canada Greener Buildings Grant (commercial stream): The Canada Infrastructure Bank has financing programs for large commercial building efficiency retrofits — not grants but low-cost loans that can significantly reduce retrofit financing burden
Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) Programs
The IESO manages Ontario's electricity grid and delivers industrial energy efficiency programs funded through electricity system charges:
- Save on Energy — Business Program: Rebates of up to $200 per kW of peak demand reduction for commercial and industrial businesses implementing energy efficiency improvements. Measures include LED lighting upgrades, HVAC controls, compressed air system improvements, and variable frequency drives
- Industrial Accelerator Program (IAP): For large industrial customers (over 1 MW demand) — incentives covering up to 50% of the cost of custom energy efficiency projects, with no per-project cap in some streams
- Process and Systems Upgrade (PSU) stream: Prescriptive rebates for specific energy efficiency measures such as motors, compressors, and refrigeration systems
- Application: Through registered Save on Energy trade allies (contractors); or directly at saveonenergy.ca
Enbridge Gas Efficiency Programs
Enbridge Gas (Ontario's primary natural gas distributor) offers a suite of rebate programs for business customers reducing natural gas consumption:
- Commercial HVAC Program: Rebates for high-efficiency boilers, furnaces, rooftop units, and water heaters (replacing equipment older than 10–15 years)
- Custom Retrofit Program: For complex projects — provides custom incentives calculated on the basis of projected gas savings (typically $0.40–$0.60 per GJ of estimated annual savings)
- Process Heating Program: Targets industrial and food processing operations using natural gas for heat — incentives for combustion optimization, heat recovery, and process efficiency improvements
- Application: Through Enbridge's business portal at enbridgegas.com/business — most programs require pre-approval before purchasing equipment
Clean Growth Hub and Green Investment Programs
The federal Clean Growth Hub (cleangrowthhub.ca) is a single-window referral service that connects businesses to the right federal green funding program. For Ontario businesses investing in clean technology:
- Strategic Innovation Fund — Clean Technology Stream: Large-scale projects ($10M+) in clean energy, clean manufacturing, and low-carbon solutions
- Net Zero Accelerator: Up to $8 billion committed for industrial decarbonization — mid-large manufacturers in high-emission sectors (steel, cement, chemicals, auto) are priority targets
- Clean Technology Manufacturing Investment Tax Credit: 30% refundable tax credit for investments in eligible clean technology equipment, including solar, wind, energy storage, and low-carbon heat production equipment. Available immediately on equipment purchases.
On-Farm Energy Programs (Agriculture Sector)
Ontario farmers have access to dedicated energy efficiency programs:
- AgriSolar Program: Federal and provincial support for solar installations on farm buildings and land — reducing electricity costs and generating Clean Power Income through net metering agreements with local utilities
- OSCIA Environmental Farm Plan: Includes energy efficiency improvement incentives as part of the broader environmental planning process
- Greenbelt Foundation Programs: Grants for farms and rural businesses in the Greenbelt adopting sustainable practices
Electric Vehicle and Fleet Programs
For Ontario businesses with fleets or commercial vehicles:
- Incentives for Zero-Emission Vehicles (iZEV): Federal rebates of up to $5,000 for eligible electric or hydrogen passenger vehicles, and up to $10,000 for medium/heavy duty commercial ZEVs. Corporate purchasers qualify.
- Electric Vehicle Charging Incentive Program (EVCIP — federal): Up to 50% of eligible costs (to a maximum of $5,000 per unit) for businesses purchasing and installing Level 2 EV chargers at commercial locations
- IESO EV Smart Charger Program: Additional incentives for businesses installing smart (grid-responsive) charging infrastructure at commercial properties
Application Strategy for Green Grants
Get a qualified energy audit first. Many programs require a pre-project energy assessment from a registered energy auditor. This audit is itself often eligible for a rebate (Enbridge and IESO both offer audit incentives). The audit identifies the highest-value improvements and ensures your project design maximizes available incentives.
Pre-approval is mandatory for most programs. Unlike some business grants where retroactive claims are sometimes accepted, energy and green programs almost universally require pre-approval before purchasing or installing equipment. Submitting after the fact results in automatic denial.
Stack utility incentives with tax credits. The Clean Technology Investment Tax Credit (federal) and IESO rebates can be applied to the same project — the tax credit applies to the net cost after the rebate, but you still benefit from both.
